🇱🇮 LIECHTENSTIEN (Vaduz)

A Small Country, A Quiet Surprise

Crossing the border into Vaduz, Liechtenstein—the fourth country on our journey after Innsbruck, Austria—my immediate impression was how strikingly modern it felt. Despite its modest size as one of the smallest countries in the world, everything from its sleek architecture to its impeccably clean streets projected a sense of refined order. We spent the entire afternoon exploring the capital. Upon arrival, our first mission was simply finding a place open for lunch, as many local establishments were still closed due to the holiday season or late opening hours. When we finally found an open restaurant, our tour group ended up being their very first customers of the day.

Looking up toward the mountains, the most vivid sights that caught my eye were Gutenberg Castle and the iconic Vaduz Castle perched high above the valley. There was something truly mesmerizing about seeing those historic structures rooted at the edge of the cliffs, seamlessly blending medieval history with the dramatic Alpine landscape, even though we didn't make the climb to visit them up close. Instead, we spent most of our time strolling through Vaduz's quiet commercial center, browsing local shops to pick up a few souvenirs to add to my growing refrigerator magnet collection.

Along the main pedestrian path, I passed a closed Lego store and held out a small hope that it might open before we had to leave so I could grab a quick collectible, but it remained shut for the day. Still, walking through the calm streets left a lasting impression. Throughout most of our travels in Europe, I realized that one of the best souvenirs was simply having my passport stamped at every border crossing. Unfortunately, because most European nations have open borders with no immigration checkpoints, getting a physical stamp is surprisingly rare. Luckily, in Liechtenstein, we stumbled upon an establishment that officially offers passport stamps—a small, priceless addition to my collection that made the stop feel complete. Liechtenstein may be small with only a handful of commercial hubs, but it operates with remarkable efficiency, peace, and prosperity.

As I took in the quiet surroundings, I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to call a place like this home. The sheer tranquility of the country—far removed from the corruption, noise, and inefficient public services I often experience back home—was something I deeply envied. Liechtenstein proved that a nation doesn't need vast territory to offer its people a high quality of life. If given the chance to live in such a serene and well-run country, I would pack my bags with zero hesitation.
